20.「化小衣」

Small Joss Paper Burning (Fa Siu Yi)

七月十四晚上有個小規模的分衣施食儀式,吉澳人稱為「化小衣」。七月十五晚上「化大衣」,規模比「化小衣」隆重得多,非常熱鬧。入夜後鬼王巡村,眾人簇擁,舉着鬼王,鳴鑼開道,銅鈸、鑼鼓喧天,有如包青天出巡。巡村的作用是藉着「山大人」鎮攝遊魂野鬼令其不得無端生事,以保吉澳一方太平。


 

巡行路線由天后宮出發,經西澳到澳背塘,回頭至中心澳、東澳,最後以赤角頭沙灘為終點。巡行時路過水井時,要舉着鬼王向井內望一望,俗稱「影井」。我猜水井是容易發生意外的地方,一般人迷信有水的地方有水鬼拉人落水找替身,因此要特別關注,讓鬼王降伏水鬼,以保前來取水的人平安。「山大人」到達赤角頭時,沙灘上已點燃了數行長長的香燭,旁邊散落由村公所供應的施食飯餸。數個村民前來拜祭燒衣,有人口中唸唸有詞為孤魂超度,呼喚遊魂到來领取衣食。大约近深夜時便火化「山大人」,寓意它帶同遊魂野鬼一起離開陽間,令吉澳回復安寧清淨。

On the night of 14th July, there was a small-scale ceremony, known as Fa Siu Yi, for the distribution of clothes and almsgiving. On the following night, there was a much bigger ceremony, known as Fa Tai Yi (Big Joss Paper Burning). After nightfall, the King of Ghosts was carried through the village in a lively procession featuring gongs and drums at the head. The function of the village parade was to suppress the wandering spirits and wild ghosts with the King of Ghosts so that they would not cause any trouble, thus ensuring peace on Kat O.

 

The parade route started at the Tin Hau Temple, passed through Sai O to O Pui Tong, then back to Chung O and Tung O, and ended at Chek Kok Tau. When passing by a water well during the procession, participants held up the King of Ghosts and looked into the well, commonly known as the Shadow Well. The well was a place where there had been accidents, and it was believed that the King of Ghosts could subdue the water ghosts to ensure the safety of those who came to fetch water. Before the King of Ghosts arrived at Chek Kok Tau, several long lines of joss sticks were lit on the beach, and food for alms supplied by the village office was scattered nearby. A few villagers would pay their respects, burn clothes, pray for the souls of orphans, and call on the travelling souls to receive food and clothes. At around midnight, the King of Ghosts would be cremated, symbolising the departure of the wandering souls and ghosts from the world of the living, thus ensuring peace and tranquillity on Kat O.
